A pivotal innovation in farming technology happened right in Homer Township all the way back in the 1830s when John Lane invented the first-ever steel plow at his farm at 16217 S. Gougar Road. That historic site, which still operates as a working organic farm, opened its doors to visitors the weekend of July 8-9 for the second annual Historic John Lane Days, shining a light on past agriculture techniques, present advancements and the future of Midwestern farming throughout the event.
