The Forest Preserve District of Will County is seeking volunteers who are willing to pitch in to improve local preserves by signing up for an upcoming workday. During the scheduled workdays, volunteers will help remove invasive species in the preserves, which allows native plants and trees to flourish and provide food and shelter for the insects, birds and animals that live in Will County’s forests.

Many students had never heard of the traditional Korean dish Bee-bim Bop until they read about it in the popular children’s book of the same name by Linda Sue Park.

 Now they can’t get enough of it and want to learn more.

To feed their interest, Young School Library Media Professional Debra Primozic has created a display of multicultural books throughout the library, highlighting everything from the customs and traditions of Russia, Italy and Poland to the “mix-mix rice” dish of Korea and the sea turtles of Oman.

The stakes were high when Sandburg and Lockport Township met in a girls tennis dual meet last week. Not only are the two teams traditionally at or near the top of the conference, a change in the way the league standings are done meant that whichever team won would get a point and a leg up in the conference race.

Next season could be a special one for the Lockport Township girls soccer team. The team finished this year with a 14-7-2 (5-1) record — good for second place in the SouthWest Suburban Conference Blue Division — and there was only one senior on the roster.

By the end of the week, the Lockport Township boys basketball team had run out of moral victories. A week that started out on a positive note with a big overtime victory against Bloom Township, ended with a pair of Porter losses.
