Providence always has had a top girls Volleyball program, and this season may be no different.
The team participated Thursday, July 26, in the Palos Courts Summer League Tournament, but fell in the quarterfinals to Lockport, the tournament's eventual winner.
The Celtics went 7-3 in pool play to tie for third in their pool with Oak Lawn, behind Sandburg (10-0) and East (9-1). In the playoffs, Providence defeated Shepard 25-12, 25-11 before falling to Lockport 25-19, 25-19 in the quarterfinals.
The Celtics, however, were missing two of their top players: senior setter Krista Brakauskas and senior middle hitter Alyssa Maloney.
"Krista will be entering her third year as our setter," Providence coach Rachel Ellingson said. "She was gone on a family vacation, and Alyssa was at camp."
Ellingson, who guided the Celtics to a 28-9 record and an East Suburban Catholic Conference title last season, will also look for big things from a trio of senior players. They are setter Marisa Dion, outside/right side hitter Lacey Hill, and libero Becca Rachke.
"In the summer, everyone got an opportunity to play," Ellingson said. "It's a great time to evaluate and see what we need to improve on."
