Homer Glen residents and visitors may eventually have another grocery store, gas station and pharmacy to shop at in the future.
Meijer has been part of an annexation agreement with the Village of Homer Glen since 2008, according to Mayor Jim Daley, and the store's representatives have been recently surveying their property — the lot south of Home Depot on Bell Road — and has paid professional fees as part of the agreement.
"They've paid the professional fees, which is an indication that they'll start to move forward," Daley said in a phone interview Friday, Oct. 26. "This is a very positive thing."
Daley noted that he and the Village staff have been in contact with the Meijer camp for the last year for "some time." The annexation agreement was approved in 2008 through Will County, but with the recession and state of the economy, Meijer held back on their progress. Once Daley became the mayor, he had that property annexed, and as part of that agreement, Meijer would have substantial compliance with the preapproved plans with Will County.
For Meijer to move forward, their final plans, such as engineering materials, they will have to come before the Village Board for final approval. Details as to when Meijer would break ground, pending the board's approval, are not available at this time.
"They have not given us any dates," Daley said. "They will start working staff and go do what they have to do. All of that will come back to the board."
