August 08, 2012 In the July 26 edition of The Homer Horizon, we reported on Christopher DiAngi's report of a UFO sighting in Homer Glen. Since then, we've had several residents call to offer their take on what the strange lights in the sky may have been.
DiAngi, 36, said he was driving through Homer Glen at 9:30 p.m. Saturday, June 30 — making his regular commute between his home in Oak Lawn and the GameStop in Lockport, where he serves as manager — when he spotted something unusual in the sky.
Just north of Homer Jr. High on Bell Road, DiAngi said he saw a "triangular formation — three blue-white lights on my left that were particularly low on the horizon," as he described it on the site www.ufostalker.com, where he reported the sighting.
He said he was confused by their unusual color and formation, and saw them coming from the west, traveling in a straight line. He said they appeared to be glowing spheres, roughly 30-50 feet in diameter, spaced 150-200 feet apart, at an elevation of 1,000-1,500 feet. He said he thinks the objects were likely part of a single unit, because of their fixed relationship to one another. The sighting lasted for roughly 20 seconds before they moved out of sight, he said.
Homer Glen resident Terry Elkins, who said he lives on the south end of the village, called following the publication of the story to say he, too, saw something in the sky that night. He said he noticed two objects moving through the sky, and it appeared as though they were glowing.
"It looked like a hot air balloon, but it was moving too fast," he said.
A reader named Chris Plouzek, who lives in the Meadowview subdivision, emailed the paper suggesting one possible explanation for the strange lights in the sky. He noted that he was outside that night, because the family was having a birthday party for his son.
"It was flying luminaries," Chris said. "We saw several throughout the night. They also lit off a few more the following weekend. Just thought you would like to know what the blue lights really were."
